What Word Rush is

Word Rush is a spelling game from Kindergarten to Year 6. You are shown a sentence with a word missing, and four spellings to choose from. Only one is right, and the clock is running. Each round lasts 90 seconds in Years 2–6, 120 seconds in Year 1 and 180 seconds in Kindergarten.

Spelling is the part of English that rewards seeing a word often. A game gets a child in front of far more words than a worksheet does, because they want another go.

How it is put together

• A separate ladder for each year. 7 tracks, one for each year from Kindergarten to Year 6, so a Year 3 child is not being asked Year 6 questions.
• 100 levels in each of Years 2–6, 20 in Year 1 and 10 in Kindergarten, 10 questions each. That is 5,300 questions in all, and they get harder as the ladder goes up.
• Kindergarten and Year 1 are read aloud. The voice says the word, reads the sentence with the word in it, and says the word again. It never reads out the four spellings, because they would all sound the same — the child picks the one that looks right.
• Kindergarten and Year 1 are free with an account. The first 5 levels of every year need no account at all; every Kindergarten and Year 1 level is free to a signed-in parent. Levels 6 and up in Years 2–6 come with a subscription.
• A weekly leaderboard. Your best score on each level counts, and the board starts fresh every Monday, so a good week is always within reach.

Is Word Rush free? The first 5 levels of all 7 year levels are, without signing in. Every Kindergarten and Year 1 level is free with a free account. The rest of Years 2–6 is part of the subscription.

What year is it for? Kindergarten to Year 6. You pick the year, and the questions are pitched to it.

How long does a game take? About 90 seconds a round in Years 2–6 (longer in Kindergarten and Year 1), with 10 questions in a level. It is designed for a few minutes at a time rather than a long sitting.
