What the Writing Coach does
A child writes to a curriculum-based prompt and gets feedback straight away — not a mark out of ten, but the specific things to change and the one to work on next. The Writing Coach covers Years 2 to 10, the same top year the graded practice reaches: the graded Maths practice tests run Kindergarten to Year 10, the English ones Kindergarten to Year 10, and the mastery lessons reach Year 10 too.
Your child's words never leave the device
The writing itself is checked in the browser and is never sent to us or stored. Only the skill scores — numbers — are saved, so the Mastery Map can fill in and show progress over time. Nobody at AceTheirTest can read what your child wrote, because we never receive it.
What it marks
18 things, each with its own check rather than one overall impression:
spelling, homophones, plurals and suffixes, capital letters, apostrophes, commas, punctuating dialogue, sentence structure, sentence openers, linking words, consistent tense in stories, subject-verb agreement, verb groups (could have, not could of), pronoun reference, vocabulary, paragraphing, shaping a whole text and analytical response.
Some notes are ideas to try — a more precise word, a longer piece, a different sentence opener. They are suggestions, never counted against your child, and the coach only marks something wrong when it can prove it. Each note shows its Australian Curriculum code, with the NSW syllabus outcome and the Victorian Curriculum code where one matches.
The three kinds of writing
- Narrative — telling a story that goes somewhere, in the Writing Coach for Years 2 to 10.
- Persuasive — making a case and backing it up, in the Writing Coach for Years 2 to 10.
- Analytical — responding to a text rather than writing one, which is not what the younger years are asked to do, in the Writing Coach for Years 7 to 10.
What it is not
It is not a human marker, and it does not grade creativity or ideas. It checks the things a checker can genuinely check — the mechanics and the shape of the writing — and it tells you which one to fix first.
