A practice set is a slice of the real test at the real pace per question — a few texts, a spelling section, a run of grammar or numeracy items — and stays the same every time, so a child can work through them in order and come back to one. Sit a whole NAPLAN paper under real timing
Exam mode is the real test's shape and clock, at home. Pick a year and:
- Sit the whole paper — Reading, Conventions of language and Numeracy at their real lengths and timings — or one section on its own.
- A fresh paper every time, drawn from our banks, so a child practises pacing, not memorising one test.
- Spelling is dictation — the word read aloud in a sentence, then typed — and Years 7 and 9 numeracy open without a calculator, as the real test does.
- Writing has its own test: one prompt against the real clock, then the Writing Coach's check and a marking sheet — the NAPLAN writing test.
Structure and timings follow ACARA's assessment framework. The real test is tailored to each student's answers; ours is a fixed paper at the same length and timing.
What the real test looks like on screen
Sit ACARA's free public demonstration site once before March — it runs on the same platform as the real test. What to expect:
- Question types. Multiple choice plus type-in, drag-and-drop and click-a-word. Ours are multiple choice with every answer explained; try the other types on the demonstration site.
- Every kind of text. Stories, information texts, poems, instructions and notices — our reading papers cycle through them too.
- Tools. A ruler, protractor or calculator appears only where a question allows it. Year 3 numeracy has none.
- Tailored and locked. A strong start brings harder questions, and some sections cannot be revisited once finished.

When it happens, and what it looks like
NAPLAN tests four things, all built from the Australian Curriculum: reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. It is not a separate syllabus, so curriculum practice is NAPLAN practice.
Schools pick their own days inside that window, so check the exact dates with your child’s school. NAPLAN moved from May to March in 2023.
The tests are online and tailored — every student starts with a similar set of questions, and the next set gets easier or harder depending on how they answer. The conventions of language test has locked sections instead. Year 3 writing is the one test still done on paper.
Results are reported as proficiency levels rather than the old ten-band scale.
How to use this site for NAPLAN
Start with one free test in the domain you are least sure about — Test 1 is free in every subject and every year level, with no card and no account needed. Every answer option is explained, right and wrong, so a wrong guess still teaches the idea behind it. If your child is signed in, their Mastery Map fills in as they go and shows which skills are secure and which are not, against the curriculum code NAPLAN is built on.
For the writing test, the Writing Coach takes a narrative or persuasive prompt — the two text types NAPLAN uses — and gives instant feedback on spelling, punctuation, grammar and structure, quoting your child’s own sentences back to them. Year 3 families should practise on paper too, since that is how Year 3 sits it.
Common questions
When is NAPLAN 2027?
The NAPLAN test window runs 10–22 March 2027. Schools choose their own days inside that window, so check the exact dates with your child's school. NAPLAN has been held in March since 2023.
Which year levels sit NAPLAN?
Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. AceTheirTest covers all four: numbered NAPLAN practice sets for reading, spelling, grammar and punctuation and numeracy, and full timed exam-mode papers, at every one of the four years. What is tested in NAPLAN?

Is this the official NAPLAN test?
No. AceTheirTest is an independent practice platform and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to ACARA or NAPLAN. Our questions are written to the Australian Curriculum, which is what NAPLAN assesses.
How is the NAPLAN writing test marked?
Against ten criteria: audience, text structure, ideas, character and setting (narrative) or persuasive devices (persuasive), vocabulary, cohesion, paragraphing, sentence structure, punctuation and spelling. The Writing Coach checks the six language criteria on your child's own writing; the four about ideas and structure need a reader, and this page lists what to look for.
