Which code applies to your child
Australia has one national curriculum and two states that write their own version of it. Every week below carries all three, so you can check it against whatever your child's school actually teaches.
NSW New South Wales
NESA syllabus outcomes, like MA2-RN-01. This is what a NSW school plans from.
AU Australian Curriculum
ACARA v9 content descriptions, like AC9M3N01. This is the code for
Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the ACT, which use
the national curriculum directly.
VIC Victoria
Victorian Curriculum F–10 Version 2.0, like VC2M3N02. Matched to each lesson on
the content description itself, never by code number — Victoria renumbered many of them.
Western Australia
WA adapts the Australian Curriculum but publishes its mandated content without
codes, so there is nothing to cite. WA families should read the AU row —
it is the same content.
Victorian codes were matched against VCAA's published content descriptions on 30 August 2026. 89% of weeks carry one. Where Victoria worded an outcome differently enough that no match could be verified, the week says so rather than showing a code we cannot stand behind.

Why anything to the power of zero is 1
The zero index is not a special case anyone invented. It is forced by the division law, and you can watch it happen.
2 : 3 is not two thirds
A ratio compares parts to each other. A fraction compares a part to the whole. In 2 : 3 there are five parts, so the first share is two fifths.
A letter is a number you have not been told
In 3a the letter stands for a number, not for a thing. That single distinction decides whether the rest of algebra makes sense.
Solving is undoing, in reverse order
You built the expression by doing things to x in order. To get x back, undo them in the opposite order — like taking off shoes before socks.
How many diameters fit around a circle
π is not a magic constant. It is the answer to a measurement: the way round a circle is always a bit more than three times the way across.
Every area formula is a rectangle in disguise
You do not need five formulas. A triangle is half a rectangle, and a parallelogram is a rectangle with a slice moved from one end to the other.
One formula for every prism
Volume of any prism is the area of its cross-section times its length. Cylinders included. There is no separate formula to learn.
'Add 3 each time' does not tell you the 50th term
The step tells you how a pattern grows. The rule tells you where any term sits. Getting from one to the other is what a linear rule is for.
Angles copy themselves along parallel lines
Cross two parallel lines with a third and only two angle sizes exist. Every angle in the diagram is one of them.
Tear the corners off a triangle
The angles of any triangle add to 180° because the three corners fit together into a straight line. Every other angle fact follows from it.
Pythagoras is about squares, not lines
a² + b² = c² is a statement about areas. The two smaller squares, tiled together, exactly fill the big one.

Why −3² and (−3)² are different numbers
The bracket decides what is being squared. Without one, the minus sign is not part of the number being multiplied.
Up 20%, then down 20%, and you are worse off
Percentage change multiplies, it does not add. The second percentage is taken of a different number from the first.
The index laws are just counting
You do not memorise the index laws. You count how many of the factor there are, and the laws fall out of the counting.
You cannot compare until one side matches
Two prices, two sizes, no comparison. Make one quantity the same in both and the answer is immediate.
Factorising is expanding, read backwards
If you can expand a bracket, you can factorise. It is the same equation, read right to left, and you can always check it by expanding again.
When x is on both sides
You cannot undo an equation while the unknown is in two places. Collect the x terms onto one side first, then it is a Year 7 equation again.
Same perimeter, completely different area
Perimeter does not decide area. Two shapes can have identical outlines to walk around and hold wildly different amounts of space.
Cut it out, or average the parallel sides
A shape with a hole is a subtraction. And a trapezium is a rectangle whose width is the average of the two parallel sides.
The exterior angle shortcut
Swing a triangle's side out past a corner and the angle you make equals the two far interior angles added together. No subtraction needed.
Every square is a rectangle
The quadrilateral names are not a list of separate shapes. They nest inside each other, and knowing the nesting tells you which properties you may use.
Using Pythagoras backwards, to test a corner
The theorem also runs in reverse. If a² + b² equals c², the triangle IS right-angled — which is how a builder squares a corner with a tape measure.
The data decides the graph
You do not choose a graph because it looks good. The type of data you have rules most graphs out before you start.
One extreme value destroys the mean
The mean uses every number, so one wild value drags it. The median only cares about position, so it barely moves.
Count the opposite instead
When the thing you want is hard to count, count everything else and subtract. The probability of not-A is always 1 minus the probability of A.

The full body paragraph
PEEL has four equal letters, so students write four equal sentences.
The Paragraph Under Time
The explanation is where the marks are, so it is the thing that must never be what runs out of time.
Unseen, Under Time
The change is one minute at the front, taken from the claim and the quote — never from the explanation.

An aspect the two texts do not differ on is not an aspect. Test it before you write 200 words on it.
Comparing Two Texts That Agree
"They agree" is not an aspect. It's the shared ground.

Year 7 this week is learning that "better" needs a standard. Year 8 already has that.

Six moves were built one at a time. Today they arrive together, on a pair nobody has seen, with a clock running.
Writing To The Question Under Time
Students do read the instruction word. Then, under time pressure, they answer the question they expected anyway.
When the text stops making sense
Re-reading the sentence you got stuck on is usually the wrong move. Read on — the sentence that explains it almost always comes next.
Year 9 Maths
Area of composite shapes and practical problems
Break the shape into pieces you already know, then add or subtract the AREAS — never the lengths.
Surface Area of Prisms
Surface area is the net, added up. The perpendicular height finds a face's area; the slant side never does.
Surface Area of Cylinders
Unroll the curved surface and it is a rectangle: as long as the circumference, as tall as the cylinder.
Composite Solids
When two solids are joined, two faces disappear — not one.
Numbers of Any Magnitude
A number carries two separate pieces of information: which digits, and how big.
Calculating With Scientific Notation
"Every number on that line is correct. And it's still not the answer — because 48 isn't between 1 and 10, and you told me last week that's the rule."
Measurement Problems And Significant Figures
An answer cannot be more precise than the worst measurement that went into it.
Summary Statistics And What They Throw Away
A summary statistic throws information away on purpose. That is what it is for — and the only real skill is knowing which information you can afford to lose.
Comparing Two Datasets
Comparing two datasets means comparing two different things: where they SIT, and how SPREAD OUT they are. A student who reports only the first has answered half the question — and it is the half that can point the wrong way.
The Data Block Reviewed
Week 9 installed *"better at what?"* — then handed the student the answer every time. In an exam the purpose is buried in the clause that reads like scene-setting.
Algebraic fractions obey the fraction rules
Nothing new is happening. You still cannot add fractions until the denominators match, and letters do not change that.
Make the fraction disappear first
An equation with a fraction in it is not harder. Multiply every term by the denominator and the fraction is gone before you start.
A negative index is not a negative number
A minus in the index means one over. It has nothing to do with the answer being negative, and 2 to the power minus 3 is a small positive number.
Multiply along the branches, add down them
A tree diagram turns a multi-stage problem into arithmetic. Along a path you multiply. Between different paths you add.
Correlation is not cause
Two things moving together does not mean one causes the other. Something else may be driving both, or the link may be accidental.
Simple interest is a straight line
Simple interest pays the same amount every year, because it is always worked out on the original amount and never on what has been added.
Compound interest is a power, and time beats rate
Because each year's interest earns interest of its own, the total is a multiplier raised to a power — and doubling the years does more than doubling the rate.
Same shape, different size
Similar figures have equal angles and every pair of matching sides in the same ratio. That single ratio is the scale factor, and it does all the work.
Three formulas, one right-angled triangle
Midpoint, gradient and length are not three things to memorise. Draw the right-angled triangle under the interval and all three read straight off it.
m is the steepness, c is where it starts
Every straight line is described by two numbers: how steep it is, and where it crosses the vertical axis. y = mx + c is those two numbers, in order.
A solution is a crossing point
Solving an equation and finding where two graphs cross are the same question asked twice. That is why a graph can answer an algebra problem.
A parabola turns. An exponential never does
A parabola comes back — it falls, reaches a lowest point, and rises. An exponential curve only ever goes one way, and that difference decides everything about them.
Which side is 'opposite' depends on where you stand
The labels are not fixed to the triangle. Opposite and adjacent are named from the angle you are working at, and they swap when you move.
Draw the triangle, then it is last lesson's question
Bearings and angles of elevation sound like new topics. They are ways of describing a right-angled triangle in words, and the drawing converts them.
Cut it into prisms
A composite solid has no formula of its own. Slice it into prisms and cylinders you already know, work each one out, and add.

Under time the structure survives and the argument dies. Protect the argument.
Two Readings and a Choice
A text that supports two readings is not a text you have failed to understand. It is a text doing something interesting, and saying so is the highest-value thing you can write.

A verdict is not an evaluation. Name the criterion, or there is nothing to argue from.
Comparing Texts In Different Forms
A criterion only one form could ever win is rigged. Ask: could either text win on this?

Judge a text against the job IT set out to do — not against the job another text does.

Writing To Length Under Time
Under a word limit, students cut the evidence and keep the opinion — because the opinion feels like the argument. It is the exact reverse of what earns marks.

Three numbers come back, and the third is the point: the word your comparison started at. If it started at word 250 the problem was never your writing — it was the budget, and those need completely different fixes.
Two readings, and the one the evidence pays for
A complex text usually supports more than one reading. The stronger reading is not the one you prefer — it is the one that pays for more of the text.

The tree is not the slow way. It is what stops the second stage being answered as if the first had not happened.

A surd is a power. √a = a^½, so every surd rule is an index law they have had since Year 8.
Function Notation
`f(x)` is a name tag for a rule they already use. The point of the name is that you can have more than one rule on the page at once.
Quadratics Beyond The Monic Case
Monic factorising works by guessing two numbers. Non-monic doesn't — and the reason students find it hard is that they keep trying to guess.
The Quadratic Formula And The Discriminant
The formula always works and is always slower. The discriminant tells you, before you start, which one you are looking at — so meeting the formula is not a reason to stop factorising.

Nothing new, and nothing from Year 11: today is an audit of what you already have, and one page in your own handwriting with three things to do in January and a date against them.
Surface area is the net, flattened
Unfold the solid in your head. Surface area is the total of the flat shapes you are left with, and nothing else.
The box plot shows what the mean hides
One number cannot describe a data set. A five-number summary shows where the middle half sits and how far the tails reach.
The index counts the places
Scientific notation is not a code. The index tells you how many places the decimal point moves, and its sign tells you which way.
The line of best fit, and where it stops being useful
A line through the data lets you predict. Predicting beyond the data you collected is not prediction, it is a guess with a ruler.
Rearranging to find the missing piece
The simple interest formula has four letters. Any three of them give you the fourth, and rearranging is the same undoing you use on any equation.
Depreciation is compounding, backwards
Losing 20% a year is the same machinery as gaining it. The multiplier is below 1 instead of above it, and everything else is identical.
Area scales by the square, volume by the cube
Double every length and the area quadruples while the volume goes up eight times. That is why a scale model is far lighter than it looks.
Parallel gradients match, perpendicular ones multiply to −1
Two lines never meeting, or meeting at a right angle, are both facts about their gradients alone. Nothing else about the lines matters.
From two points to the equation
Two points fix a line completely. Find the gradient first, then use either point to find where the line starts.
Count the crossings, count the solutions
Before solving anything, sketch the two graphs. The number of times they meet is the number of answers you should end up with.
The axis of symmetry sits halfway between the roots
A parabola is symmetrical, so its turning point is exactly midway between the two places it crosses the x-axis. Find the roots and you have the axis.
Finding the angle, not the side
Trigonometry runs both ways. Given two sides you can recover the angle, using the inverse functions — and that is a different button and a different setup.

A text's value is not a property of the text. It is a judgement made by particular people, at a particular time, for reasons that can be named.
