1. Number and place value (to 10,000)
Hey there! Place value is how we understand big numbers. Every digit has a special job depending on where it sits. In the number 3,472:
- 3 is in the thousands place (3,000)
- 4 is in the hundreds place (400)
- 7 is in the tens place (70)
- 2 is in the ones place (2)
You can read it as "three thousand, four hundred and seventy-two". You can do this up to 10,000!
Why it matters: You use place value when reading house numbers on a big street or when your mum or dad tells you how much something costs in the shop.
- Thinking the 5 in 5,678 is worth 5 instead of 5,000. (Remember: the position matters!)
- Writing 1,234 as "one hundred and twenty-three" instead of "one thousand, two hundred and thirty-four".
2. Addition and subtraction strategies
Addition is when we put numbers together to find a total. Subtraction is when we take away or find the difference. In Year 3, we use smart strategies instead of just counting on our fingers. Good strategies help us solve problems quickly and accurately, even with bigger numbers.
Why it matters: You use addition and subtraction strategies when working out how much money you have left after buying something at the school canteen.
- Forgetting to regroup when adding: 47 + 28 = 65 (instead of 75). Students often forget to carry the ten from the ones place.
- Subtracting the smaller digit from the bigger one in each column without borrowing: 53 - 27 = 34 (wrong, should be 26).
3. Multiplication and division (2, 3, 5, 10 times tables)
Multiplication is a fast way of adding the same number many times. Division is sharing or splitting a number into equal groups. In Year 3, we focus on the 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables. These are super useful because they help you solve problems quickly!
Why it matters: You use multiplication when buying multiple items at the shop, like 5 packets of stickers at $3 each.
- Thinking 6 × 3 = 12 (adding instead of multiplying: 6 + 6 = 12).
- Mixing up division facts — for example, confusing 30 ÷ 10 = 3 with 30 ÷ 5 = 6. Always check which times table you are using.
4. Fractions (thirds, sixths)
Fractions tell us about parts of a whole. The bottom number (denominator) tells how many equal parts the whole is split into. The top number (numerator) tells how many of those parts we have. In Year 3 we learn thirds (1 whole split into 3 equal parts) and sixths (1 whole split into 6 equal parts). Example: 1/3 means one of three equal pieces. 2/6 means two of six equal pieces.
Why it matters: You use fractions when sharing a pizza or a chocolate bar fairly with your family or friends.
- Thinking 1/6 is bigger than 1/3 because 6 is a bigger number than 3.
- Writing 3/6 as 3 instead of keeping it as a fraction (forgetting it still means parts of a whole).
5. Measurement (perimeter, area introduction)
Perimeter is the total distance around the outside of a shape. You find it by adding up the lengths of all the sides. Area is the amount of space inside a shape. In Year 3, we start by counting the number of squares that fit inside a shape.
Why it matters: You use perimeter when measuring how much ribbon you need to go around a present, and area when working out how much paint is needed to cover a wall.
- Forgetting to add all sides when finding perimeter (only adding length + width instead of all four sides).
- Confusing perimeter and area — adding the sides when the question asks for the space inside (area).
6. Time (minutes, 12-hour time)
Time helps us know when things happen. We use 12-hour time with "o'clock", "past", and "to". There are 60 minutes in 1 hour.
- Half past = 30 minutes past the hour
- Quarter past = 15 minutes past the hour
- Quarter to = 15 minutes before the next hour
We also count minutes forwards and backwards.
Why it matters: You use time when working out how long until school finishes or how many minutes until your favourite TV show starts.
- Thinking "quarter past 6" is 6:30 instead of 6:15. A quarter of an hour is 15 minutes, because a whole hour of 60 minutes splits into four quarters of 15.
- Confusing "past" and "to" — writing 25 minutes to 4 as 4:25 instead of 3:35. When you hear "to", the hour has not arrived yet, so count back from the next hour instead of forward from the last one.
7. Money (calculations, change)
Money helps us buy things and gives us change when we pay. In Year 3 we use dollars ($) and cents (¢). There are 100 cents in 1 dollar. We add amounts to find totals and subtract to find change.
Why it matters: You use money calculations every time you buy snacks at the school canteen or work out if you have enough money for a new toy.
- Forgetting to line up the decimal points when adding or subtracting money amounts.
- Thinking $5.95 - $2 = $3.95 (forgetting to subtract properly from the cents).
8. 3D objects and 2D shapes
2D shapes are flat shapes with length and width (like circles, squares, triangles). 3D objects are solid shapes that have length, width and height (like cubes, spheres, cylinders). We look at their faces (flat sides), edges (lines where faces meet), and vertices (corners).
Why it matters: You see 3D objects like balls (spheres), boxes (cubes), and cans (cylinders) every day at home and at school.
- Calling a cylinder a circle (confusing the 2D face with the whole 3D object).
- Thinking a sphere has edges or vertices (it has none — it is perfectly round).
9. Data (bar graphs, picture graphs)
Data means information. We use picture graphs and bar graphs to show data so it is easy to understand.
- A picture graph uses pictures or symbols to represent things.
- A bar graph uses bars of different heights to show amounts. We read graphs by looking
at the title, labels, and what each picture or bar stands for.
Why it matters: Graphs are used in weather reports, sports scores, and when your teacher shows how many students like different activities.
- Counting each picture as 1 when the key says each picture stands for 2 or 5.
- Reading the wrong bar or row when answering questions about the graph.
10. Patterns, number rules and algebra introduction
Patterns are things that repeat in a sensible way. In Year 3 we look for number patterns (like counting in 2s, 5s, or 10s) and simple rules. Algebra introduction means using a letter or box to stand for a missing number. Example: 3, 6, 9, 12... the rule is “add 3 each time”.
Why it matters: Patterns help you predict things like how much your savings will grow or when your favourite TV show comes on each week.
- Only looking at the first two numbers instead of checking the whole pattern.
- Thinking the missing number in 8 + □ = 15 is 7 (adding instead of finding what makes the total).
