1. Number and counting (to 1000)

Hey there! Numbers help us count and tell us how many things we have. In Year 2, we learn to count all the way up to 1000. Every number has a place value:

  • The right digit is the ones place
  • The middle digit is the tens place
  • The left digit is the hundreds place

For example, in 347: 3 = 3 hundreds (300) 4 = 4 tens (40) 7 = 7 ones (7) You can read 347 as “three hundred and forty-seven”. You can also count forwards and backwards, and find numbers that come before or after another number. Great job — you’re getting really good at this!

Why it matters: When you count how many days until your birthday or how many stickers you have in your collection, you are using number and counting skills!

Common mistakes
  • Thinking 520 is bigger than 502 because it “looks bigger”. (Actually, look at the hundreds digit first — both have 5 hundreds, then compare the tens: 2 tens is bigger than 0 tens, so 520 is bigger. But students sometimes just look at the last digits.)
  • Writing “one hundred and two” as 12 instead of 102 (forgetting the zero in the tens place).

2. Addition and subtraction (to 100)

Hi friend! Addition means putting numbers together to find the total. Subtraction means taking away to find how many are left. In Year 2, we practise adding and subtracting numbers up to 100. You can use:

  • Counting on or counting back
  • Number lines
  • Place value (tens and ones)
  • Mental strategies like “make a ten” or “doubles”

Remember: Addition is joining groups, subtraction is separating groups. You’ve got this — keep practising and you’ll get super fast!

Why it matters: You use addition when you count your pocket money and subtraction when you spend some of it!

Common mistakes
  • When subtracting, forgetting to borrow. Example: 52 − 27 = 35 (wrong) instead of 25 (correct). Students often do 2−7=5 without borrowing.
  • Adding the tens and ones separately but forgetting to carry over. Example: 48 + 37 = 75 (wrong) instead of 85.

3. Multiplication introduction (groups and arrays)

Hello! Multiplication is a quick way of adding the same number again and again. It’s like counting groups of the same size. In Year 2, we learn that multiplication means equal groups. For example, 3 groups of 4 toys is written as 3 × 4. We also use arrays — neat rows and columns that show multiplication. Like this:

That is 3 rows of 4 = 3 × 4 = 12. You can also think of it as “lots of” or “times”. You’re doing great learning this new idea!

Why it matters: You use multiplication when sharing lollies equally with your friends or counting how many legs are on 4 chairs (4 × 4 legs).

Common mistakes
  • Thinking 3 × 4 means 3 + 4 = 7 instead of adding 4 three times (12). Students sometimes mix addition and multiplication.
  • Counting the rows and columns wrong in an array. For example, seeing 4 rows of 5 as 4 × 4 instead of 4 × 5.

4. Fractions (halves, quarters, eighths)

Hi friend! Fractions help us talk about parts of a whole. In Year 2, we learn about halves, quarters, and eighths.

  • Half means one of two equal parts. We write it as ½.
  • Quarter means one of four equal parts. We write it as ¼.
  • Eighth means one of eight equal parts. We write it as ⅛.

The bottom number tells you how many equal parts the whole is cut into. The top number tells you how many of those parts you have. You can colour, cut, or fold shapes to see fractions. You’re doing an awesome job learning this!

Why it matters: You use fractions when you share a pizza fairly with your family or cut a cake into equal pieces for your friends.

Common mistakes
  • Thinking that a bigger bottom number means a bigger piece (e.g. thinking ⅛ is bigger than ½). Actually, more parts means each part is smaller.
  • Shading 2 parts out of 4 but calling it a half instead of two quarters (forgetting they are the same size but different names).

5. Measurement (length, mass, capacity)

Hi friend! Measurement helps us find out how long, how heavy, or how much something holds. In Year 2 we learn about length, mass (how heavy), and capacity (how much it can hold).

  • Length: How long or tall something is (we use centimetres or metres)
  • Mass: How heavy something is (we use grams or kilograms)
  • Capacity: How much liquid something can hold (we use millilitres or litres)

We compare things using words like longer, shorter, heavier, lighter, more, or less. You can use rulers, scales, and measuring jugs. You’re getting really good at measuring things!

Why it matters: You use measurement when you check how tall you are growing, weigh your school bag, or pour juice into a glass without spilling.

Common mistakes
  • Thinking a taller container always holds more (ignoring width). A tall thin bottle can hold less than a short wide one.
  • Mixing up units — saying 100 grams is heavier than 1 kilogram (actually 1000 grams).

6. Time (o'clock, half past, quarter past/to)

Hi friend! Time helps us know when things happen during the day. In Year 2, we learn to read clocks using o'clock, half past, quarter past, and quarter to.

  • O'clock: The minute hand points to 12 (like 3 o'clock)
  • Half past: The minute hand points to 6 (30 minutes past the hour)
  • Quarter past: The minute hand points to 3 (15 minutes past the hour)
  • Quarter to: The minute hand points to 9 (15 minutes before the next hour)

The short hand tells the hour, and the long hand tells the minutes. Practise looking at a clock every day — you’re going to get really good at this!

Why it matters: You use time when you know when school starts, when your favourite show is on, or when it’s time for bed.

Common mistakes
  • Confusing quarter past and quarter to (thinking both are 15 minutes past instead of one before the hour).
  • Reading the hour hand wrong when it has moved past the number (e.g. thinking it’s still 2 o’clock when it’s actually quarter past 3).

7. Money (coins and notes, simple totals)

Hi friend! Money helps us buy things and understand how much something costs. In Year 2, we learn about coins and notes and how to add them together to find simple totals. Common Australian coins: 5¢, 10¢, 20¢, 50¢, $1, $2. Notes: $5, $10, $20 and more. We count money by starting with the biggest coins and notes first, then adding the smaller ones. You can practise by counting your own pocket money. You’re doing brilliantly!

Why it matters: You use money skills when you buy snacks at the school canteen or save up for a new toy.

Common mistakes
  • Counting all coins as 10 cents each (e.g. thinking five 20¢ coins = 50¢ instead of $1).
  • Forgetting to write the dollar sign and decimal point when the amount goes over 99 cents (writing 125 instead of $1.25).

8. 2D shapes and their properties

Hi friend! 2D shapes are flat shapes you can draw on paper. In Year 2, we learn their names and special properties like how many sides and corners they have. Common shapes:

  • Circle: round, no straight sides
  • Triangle: 3 sides, 3 corners
  • Square: 4 equal sides, 4 corners
  • Rectangle: 4 sides, 4 corners (opposite sides equal)

Some sides are straight, some are curved. Corners are where sides meet. You can sort shapes by their properties. You’re doing a fantastic job learning about shapes!

Why it matters: You see 2D shapes in road signs, windows, books, and even slices of pizza!

Common mistakes
  • Thinking a rectangle and square are the same (forgetting that a square has all sides equal, while a rectangle can have different length sides).
  • Counting the number of corners wrong by missing one when the shape is drawn at an angle.

9. Data and graphs (picture graphs, tally charts)

Hi friend! Data means information we collect, like how many toys we have or favourite colours. Graphs and charts help us show this information so it’s easy to see and understand. In Year 2 we use:

  • Tally charts: marks (||||) to count quickly (every fifth mark crosses like this: 𝕏)
  • Picture graphs: pictures or symbols that stand for things

We read graphs by counting the pictures or tallies to find the most, least, or how many altogether. You’re doing so well learning how to organise information!

Why it matters: You use data and graphs when your class votes for their favourite story or when you count how many birds visit your garden each day.

Common mistakes
  • Forgetting that each picture in a picture graph can represent more than one item (sometimes each picture = 2 or 5). Always read the key underneath the graph first, then multiply the number of pictures by what one picture is worth.
  • Miscounting tallies by not grouping them in fives properly. Count the crossed groups in fives first (5, 10, 15) and only then add the leftover single marks.

10. Patterns and number sequences

Hi friend! Patterns are things that repeat in a clever way. Number sequences are lists of numbers that follow a rule. In Year 2, we look for the rule in a pattern (like “add 2 each time” or “add 5 each time”) and then continue the sequence. Examples: 2, 4, 6, 8… (add 2 each time) 5, 10, 15, 20… (add 5 each time) You can use your counting skills and look carefully at the differences between numbers. You’re doing amazingly well — patterns are fun once you spot the rule!

  • Only looking at the first two numbers and guessing the rule without checking the whole sequence.
