Year 9 is the year the syllabus starts pointing at senior maths. Trigonometry arrives, algebra moves from linear to non-linear, and index laws extend to negative and zero powers. Questions stop being solvable by recognising a type and start requiring a method to be chosen — which is why Year 9 is where confident students often first find maths hard.

1. Algebra and patterns

Expanding binomial products, factorising quadratics, simplifying algebraic fractions, and the gradient-intercept form of a straight line. Non-linear relationships — parabolas and simple exponentials — are graphed and described. Factorising is the skill Year 10 assumes completely, and the difficulty is that it runs backwards from expanding, so practice at expanding does not by itself produce it.

2. Measurement and geometry

Right-angled trigonometry, surface area and volume of composite solids, and similarity proofs. Trigonometry in Year 9 is less about the ratios than about labelling: opposite and adjacent are defined relative to the angle being used, not to the page, so a diagram rotated from the familiar orientation causes more errors than the calculation ever does.

3. Statistics and probability

Bivariate data, scatterplots, lines of best fit and the language of correlation, alongside two-step probability with and without replacement. Students are asked to interpret rather than compute — to say what a correlation does and does not establish, which is the distinction between association and cause that the curriculum names explicitly at this year.

4. Number and integers

Index laws extended to negative and zero indices, scientific notation for very large and very small quantities, and the first work with surds and exact values. Scientific notation is where accuracy is lost in Year 9: converting is straightforward, and multiplying or dividing two quantities in scientific notation requires the indices and the coefficients to be handled separately, then recombined.

5. Ratios and rates

Rates of change are connected to gradient, direct proportion is expressed algebraically, and similar figures are scaled by ratio in length, area and volume. The area and volume scale factors are the Year 9 trap: doubling every length multiplies area by four and volume by eight, and a question that gives a length ratio and asks for an area ratio is testing exactly that.

6. Fractions, decimals and percentages

Percentage work becomes financial: simple and compound interest, repeated percentage change, and depreciation. Compound interest is the point at which a percentage stops being a single multiplication, and the common Year 9 error is to calculate one year's interest and multiply it by the number of years, which is simple interest wearing a different name.
