Year 10 is the bridge to senior maths, and it is the year the course stops being a set of separate topics. Quadratics, simultaneous equations, functions and non-right-angled trigonometry all arrive together, and a single question routinely uses two of them. Students who reach Year 11 comfortably are almost always the ones whose Year 10 algebra was fluent rather than merely correct.

1. Algebra and patterns
Solving quadratics by factorising, completing the square and the quadratic formula; simultaneous equations by substitution and elimination; and the graphs of parabolas, exponentials and circles. The Year 10 skill is choosing a method — a quadratic that factorises should not be put through the formula — and questions are deliberately set so that the efficient method is available and not signposted.

2. Statistics and probability
Standard deviation and the shape of a distribution, box plots and quartiles compared across data sets, and conditional probability. Year 10 asks for comparison and justification: which of two data sets is more consistent, and on what evidence. That is a written answer supported by a statistic, and it is the form senior courses assess almost exclusively.

3. Number and integers
Surds are simplified, added and rationalised; index laws are applied with fractional indices; and logarithms are introduced as the inverse of exponentiation. The fractional index is the Year 10 idea that unlocks the rest — recognising that a power of one half is a square root converts a whole class of problems into ones already solvable, and students who miss it treat surds and indices as unrelated topics.

4. Measurement and geometry
The sine and cosine rules, the area rule, trigonometry in three dimensions, and surface area and volume of spheres and cones. Non-right-angled trigonometry requires the rule to be selected from what the question provides rather than from what the topic is called, and the ambiguous case of the sine rule is the one place in school geometry where a correct calculation can still give a wrong answer.

5. Fractions, decimals and percentages
Financial mathematics is completed here: compound interest with varying periods, loan repayments and effective rates, all expressed with the exponential form rather than year-by-year. The step from Year 9 is that the number of periods is no longer small enough to work through one at a time, so the formula has to be understood rather than avoided.

6. Ratios and rates
Rates are treated as gradients and as the constant of proportionality, and direct and inverse proportion are distinguished algebraically and graphically. Inverse proportion is the new idea: as one quantity doubles the other halves, and its graph is a hyperbola rather than a line through the origin — a shape students frequently expect to be linear because every earlier proportion was.
