What Year 5 NAPLAN tests, and where to practise it

NAPLAN is not a separate syllabus. It measures the literacy and numeracy the Australian Curriculum already expects of a Year 5 student, which is why ordinary curriculum practice is the best NAPLAN preparation there is.

Reading

Comprehension of a supplied text — locating information, interpreting it, reasoning about it.

Practise it: 525 questions · Start →

Writing

One prompt, marked on structure, vocabulary, punctuation and spelling. The Writing Coach gives instant feedback quoting your child's own sentences.

Practise it: Narrative and persuasive prompts · Start →

Conventions of language

Spelling, grammar and punctuation. In NAPLAN this test has locked sections rather than adapting question by question.

Practise it: 600 questions · Start →

Numeracy

Number, algebra, measurement, space, statistics and probability.

Practise it: 600 questions · Start →

The writing test in Year 5

Year 5 sits every test online, writing included, so practising on a keyboard is realistic preparation.

Either way the prompt is narrative or persuasive — the two text types NAPLAN uses, and the two the Writing Coach is built around.

Sit a whole NAPLAN paper under real timing

Practising a domain at a time builds the skill. Exam mode puts the whole paper in front of a child at the real length and the real clock — Reading 39 questions in 50 minutes, Conventions of language 52 questions in 45 minutes, Numeracy 42 questions in 50 minutes — with the questions drawn fresh from our banks each time, so they practise pacing rather than memorising one test.

The structure and every timing come from ACARA's own assessment framework. The real test is tailored, choosing each student's next questions from how they answered the last; ours is a fixed-form paper at the same length and timing, which is what a practice paper is. The writing test is listed but not simulated — it is one open response marked by a person, and the Writing Coach is the tool for that.

Common questions

Is this Year 5 NAPLAN practice free?

Test 1 is free in every subject for Year 5 — no credit card and no account needed. The remaining tests are part of the subscription.

When do Year 5 students sit NAPLAN?

The 2027 NAPLAN window runs 10–22 March 2027. Schools choose their own days inside that window.

What does Year 5 NAPLAN cover?

Four domains: reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation), and numeracy. All four are drawn from the Australian Curriculum.

Is this the official NAPLAN test?

No. AceTheirTest is an independent practice platform, not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to ACARA or NAPLAN. Our questions are written to the Australian Curriculum, which is what NAPLAN assesses.

How is the Year 5 writing test done?

Year 5 completes the writing test online, like the rest of NAPLAN. Students get one prompt, either narrative or persuasive.

Also sitting NAPLAN this year: Year 3. For Year 5 subject practice on its own, see Maths and English — including spelling, which sits inside English.
