Year 10 English practice, done properly

Year 10 English adds one word to almost everything Year 9 asks, and the word is evaluate. Year 9 analyses how a text is built; Year 10 judges whether the building worked, and says what it cost. Two things are genuinely new. Syntax becomes a subject in its own right — how meaning and style are produced by the shape of a sentence, and what an author is doing when they experiment with punctuation. And evaluative language becomes evidence: the words a writer chooses to judge something with reveal the values they are judging from, whether or not they meant to declare them. This is the last year before senior English, and it is written that way.

Nineteen of the thirty-five questions in each test, and the ideas are more abstract than at any earlier year — a hundred and eight of them ask a student to integrate several comprehension strategies to interpret a concept the passage never states plainly. Fifty-one ask what values, beliefs or attitudes the language represents, and twenty-one ask a student to evaluate the moral or ethical position a text takes rather than to identify it. Every wrong option names the specific misreading it represents.

2. Writer's craft

Thirty of these questions turn on evaluative language, which the Year 10 curriculum treats as evidence of a person's values: revealing that a character coached her brother 'less out of loyalty to her brother than a private, slightly shameful wish' is a judgement, and the question is whose. Another fifteen are on paragraph structure varied for cohesion, and fifteen on how ideas are organised to achieve a purpose — why a final paragraph complicates a largely positive report rather than summarising it.

3. Sentence structure and punctuation

Seventy of the ninety questions here are on syntax as a source of meaning and style — a sentence that combines two ideas so that the combination itself states their relationship, or one whose comparison is carried entirely by the shape of its final clause. Fifteen more are on punctuation used as an authorial choice rather than as a rule, such as what the pair of commas around 'reliably' does to a sentence that would be grammatical without them; five ask whether a particular structure was the effective choice, which is the Year 10 addition to Year 9's analysing it.

4. Vocabulary

Precision in an academic register. Every one of the sixty Year 10 vocabulary questions asks what a word means rather than what it suggests, because the curriculum at this level is about using a technical and academic vocabulary exactly: fabrication, eligible, restraint, throttling, precarious, demonstrated.
