Year 8 is where algebra becomes the language the rest of the course is written in. Index laws replace repeated multiplication, percentage change replaces percentage of, and Pythagoras' theorem arrives — the first result students meet that lets them calculate a length they cannot measure. The step up from Year 7 is less about new arithmetic than about how many moves a single question now takes.

1. Measurement and geometry
Pythagoras' theorem, the area and circumference of circles, the volume and surface area of prisms and cylinders, and congruence. Pythagoras is the topic that separates Year 8 from Year 7: it is easy to apply when the hypotenuse is asked for and much less easy when it is given, because the subtraction has to be set up in the right order and the diagram rarely says which side is which.

2. Algebra and patterns
Expanding brackets, collecting like terms, factorising with a common factor, and solving linear equations with the unknown appearing more than once or on both sides. Students also plot linear relationships and read gradient and intercept off a graph. The persistent Year 8 difficulty is the negative sign in front of a bracket, which has to be distributed across every term inside it and is routinely applied to only the first.

3. Number and integers
The index laws are the centre of Year 8 number: multiplying and dividing terms with the same base, raising a power to a power, and the zero index. Students also work with terminating and recurring decimals and meet irrational numbers for the first time. The reliable error is applying an index law across an addition — treating the laws as something that happens to any expression with powers in it, rather than to products and quotients only.

4. Fractions, decimals and percentages
Year 8 moves from finding a percentage to changing by one: increase and decrease, profit and loss, discount, and finding the original amount after a change. That last one is the genuine Year 8 skill and the one most often got wrong, because a 20% discount is not undone by a 20% increase. Questions are set in money and measurement contexts where the reverse calculation is the natural one.

5. Statistics and probability
Two-way tables, Venn diagrams, and the probability of complementary and compound events. Students investigate how sampling method affects a conclusion, and describe the effect of an outlier on the mean against the median. Year 8 probability questions increasingly ask for a judgement — whether a sample supports a claim — rather than a fraction.

6. Ratios and rates
Ratios are divided in given proportions, simplified, and used with scale — maps, plans and scale drawings. Rates are compared for value and converted between units, so a rate given per 100 g has to be brought to the same basis as one given per kilogram before the comparison means anything. The unit conversion, not the division, is where Year 8 rate questions are lost.
